Book Club Anniversary

Can you believe it? It’s been a whole year since we’ve started our little book club! Book club is honestly one of the, if not the, thing that I look forward to most every month. We have a group of such fun, smart and zany women, and I’m so glad that I get to spend time with them in a setting like this.

Not everyone could make it this time, but we did welcome a new member - Katie (center) - which is always exciting. Dexter, as you can see from this photo, was psyched it was our first anniversary too.
We read The Fallback Plan by Leigh Stein. Overall, it was a so-so read. But the book club agreed that this author’s debut novel had the potential to be so much better. She tackles a topic that a lot of young people are dealing with right now: moving back home after college, not being able to find a job, and trying to find the motivation to live a satisfying life. There were so many subplots in the novel that we really wish had been explored more. We had so many questions that were never answered. Leigh Stein has a great voice, but her editors really didn’t do her any favors by letting her have a main character that nobody in book club sympathized with. We also agreed that the premise of this book really reminded us of Lena Dunham’s television show Girls and, for me especially (because I’m the only one who’s seen it), her film Tiny Furniture.
If you missed my previous book club posts, you can take a look at our last year.
