Walking Into A GraveYard
On our first evening in Paris, Chad and I accidentally happened upon a graveyard. We were just exploring our neighborhood when all of sudden it was just there.
I’ll be honest. Before coming to Paris, I really had no desire to see the graves of famous people. I know that it’s a thing to go see Jim Morrison’s grave, but I just thought … Meh. Not for me.
Well, when we were looking at the list of people buried in the Montmartre Cemetery and I saw Edgar Degas I’m all … Ooooo. Let’s find that one! So, we went in search of one of my favorite artists.
And exploring these Parisian graveyards is kind of cool. The city is sort of built on top of itself, meaning you can’t really bury people in the ground, which is why there are all of these above ground graveyards with crypts and visible tombs.
The whole thing is really spooky and gothic and just kind of cool. I did find it creepy though when some of the more recent burials had photos of the deceased on the headstone. No thank you.
BTW - we never did find Degas. But that’s okay. I figured out that I am, in fact, not above seeking out the graves of famous people.
