While listening to the BBC radio hour on NPR this morning, I heard a rather interesting story about Japanese people dying over the New Year’s holiday from choking on a traditional and festive rice cake called “mochi.” Here’s a link to a similar story - I couldn’t find one on the BBC’s website.
Besides being just sad (especially since it was being consumed as part of a celebration, I thought how bizarre it is to die or have to be hospitalized from eating a super-sticky rice cake.
So, I started to wonder about other sorts of unheard of (at least to me) and strange ways that people have died. Wikipedia has a very interesting and somewhat (oh who am I kidding -really) funny page on “unusual deaths.”
This is definitely something I would be interesting in reading about more and possibly doing an article on. What would be a good publication to pitch this to?
